Bismarck, N.D. – Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus reminds individual income taxpayers who filed for an extension that their deadline is Monday, October 16, 2023.

“The deadline for taxpayers who filed for an extension through the IRS this year, is fast approaching,” said Kroshus. “While applicable interest for state taxes owed during the extension period will apply, no penalty will be incurred for returns received by the deadline.”

Taxpayers who were granted a federal extension may file their state returns without penalty through October 16. While electronic filing is strongly encouraged, those unable to file electronically must have their paper return postmarked by October 16, or they may drop it off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner, on eighth floor of the Capitol.

Taxpayers who did not pay in full by April 18 are charged interest on their unpaid balance. Penalties will apply if a taxpayer does not file and pay by the October 16 extension deadline.
