Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus reminds consumers the deadline to apply for North Dakota’s gas tax refund is June 30, 2024.

“The last day to apply for a refund of state fuel taxes paid in 2023 is approaching,” stated Commissioner Kroshus. “North Dakotans working in the industrial and agricultural industries who are eligible are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and apply prior to the June 30 deadline.”

Taxpayers may qualify for different types of motor fuel tax refunds including farmers, ranchers, and industrial consumers may be eligible for a refund of 23 cents per gallon for gasoline/gasohol purchased. Gasohol is a mixture of gasoline and ethanol, with the most common mixture of 90 percent gasoline and 10 percent ethanol.

“Revenue generated from taxing motor fuels is allocated for the upkeep of highways,” said Kroshus. “Industrial consumers, farmers and ranchers are eligible for refunds since their equipment, typically do not utilize public roads.”

In 2023, $122,000 in refunds were issued for approximately 530,000 gallons of motor fuel sold in 2022. Refunds not claimed, remain in the Highway Distribution Fund maintained by the Office of State Treasurer.
